1. How do I choose the right size lampshade for my lamp base?
Picking the right lampshade size is key for a balanced look and good lighting. While personal taste and room style matter, here are some handy tips to guide you:
For table lamps, a good rule of thumb is to choose a shade that's about 2/3 as tall as the lamp base. The shade's width should be roughly the same as the base height. To look just right, the shade should hide the bulb and fittings but not stick out past the base edges.
When it comes to floor lamps, follow these simple guidelines: The shade width should be about twice the base width, usually between 16 to 20 inches or 40cm to 50cm. The shade height should be about 1/3 to 1/2 of the base height, typically 10 to 15 inches or 25cm to 38cm.
For a smart look, make sure the shade covers the bulb and fittings without going beyond the base edges. In big rooms with high ceilings, go for a larger shade (18 to 20 inches wide and 14 to 15 inches tall or 45cm to 50cm wide and 35cm to 38cm tall) to make a statement. In smaller spaces or rooms with low ceilings, pick a smaller shade (about 16 inches wide and 10-12 inches tall or around 40cm wide and 25cm to 30cm tall) to fit in nicely.
By sticking to these easy rules, you'll end up with a floor lamp that's both practical and stylish.
2. What's the best way to care for my lampshade?
Keeping your lampshade spick and span is easy! Just give it a gentle dusting with a soft cloth or use your vacuum's soft brush attachment. For fabric shades, a clean, new soft brush or curtain brush works wonders. If you're using a vacuum, keep it on low and be careful not to snag the fabric. Always turn off the power first!
Steer clear of harsh chemicals – they might harm the fabric or finish. And whatever you do, don't try wet cleaning – it'll leave nasty watermarks. Keep your lampshade in a dry spot to avoid mould and fading. If you've got silk shades, try to keep them out of direct sunlight to keep their colours vibrant.
For acrylic shades, a soft cloth or anti-static cleaner does the trick. Just keep it away from any fabric parts.
When it's time to change lamps, make sure a pro does it. They'll use the right equipment and turn off the power. Always use the same or similar lamps and ballasts when replacing.
Remember, a well-maintained lampshade can really brighten up a room!
3. How do I install a pendant light shade?
Putting up a new pendant shade is easy, but it depends on the fitting type. Here's a simple guide:
- Check if your new shade matches the old fitting. Different pendants have various requirements. If unsure, just ask us.
- Always turn off the power first.
- Take off the old shade by unscrewing the bulb, then remove the retaining ring that holds the shade. Keep this ring handy – you'll need it for the new shade.
- Attach your new shade by threading the lampholder through its opening. Secure it with the retaining ring, then pop the bulb back in.
- Give it a quick once-over to ensure it's stable and straight before switching the power on.
- Now, step back and enjoy your stylish new lampshade!
If you're not confident, it's best to call in a professional electrician. And remember, be careful when working at a height.
4. What's your refund policy for lampshades?
We welcome returns on regular lampshades within 14 days of arrival, as long as they're in pristine condition. Bespoke or custom-made shades aren't returnable. If your lampshade turns up damaged, give us a shout within 48 hours, and we'll sort out a replacement or refund for you.
5. Is there a certain bulb I should use with your shades?
Absolutely! We suggest LED bulbs for your lamps. They're energy-smart and don't get too hot, which is great for your lampshades. Make sure the bulb fits your lamp base properly. Smaller shades work well with E14 bulbs, while bigger ones usually need E27 bulbs. Always check your lamp's wattage guide. Oh, and if you've got dimmer switches, remember to use dimmable bulbs. It's all about creating the perfect ambiance!
6. Do you offer customisable options for lampshades?
Certainly! We've got loads of customisation options for you. From sizes and shapes to fabrics, linings and trims - we've got it all. Want to use your own material or get a special print? No problem! Give us a shout, and we'll help you bring your design ideas to life.
7. How do I fix a wobbly or crooked lampshade?
First, check if the lampshade fits properly on the base. If it's still wobbly, check if the harp or fitting is bent and adjust it. You can also secure the shade by tightening the top finial or washer. For pendant shades, check the ceiling fitting or cable tension.

11. Are bulbs supplied with your lights?
While we don't usually include bulbs with our shades, we're happy to suggest options that suit your shade type and the mood you're looking to create. For top-notch lighting, we recommend trying energy-saving LED bulbs in your chosen lampshade.
12. Why do some people call bulbs “lamps”?
These terms are used interchangeably, but there's a subtle distinction. In interior design, "lamp" is the proper term for what we often call a "light bulb". This naming comes from the object's shape and purpose. The word "bulb" originally described any rounded object with a tapered end, which fits many old-style incandescent lamps. In lighting terms, the "lamp" is the bit that gives off light, while the "fixture" holds it in place. Over time, people started saying "bulb" because of its shape, and this stuck. So, while you might hear "bulb" more often, "lamp" is the technically correct term.
